First Citizen's Auditor Gathering Held on January 15th

On January 15th, the first citizen’s auditor gathering took place at the Japanese Language Center for International Students. Dean Iwasaki (School of International and Area Studies) took part in the event as a guest speaker. In front of more than 20 ambitious participants, the dean talked about the possibilities and significance of universities and the community education in the 21st Century.

TUFS introduced this system in order to offer “interactive” learning opportunities which are different from conventional classes and extension lectures, aiming at being like “Cafe philosophique” whose concept was to bring people together and discuss ideas.

Dean Iwasaki emphasized the significance of voluntary learning among citizens, citing teaching experiments conducted by French educational philosopher Joseph Jacotot. The talk was followed by a lively question and answer session where the participants discussed several topics including the role of citizen auditors at the university and how to learn.

TUFS faculty members, undergraduates, and exchange students joined the gathering and had a constructive conversation with auditors. All participants resolved to continue their efforts. The next gathering will be held on February 26th, after the graduation ceremony.
