March 28, 2017
On Monday 28 th November 2016, TUFS invited and awarded an honorary PhD to 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Svetlana Alexandrovna Alexievich.
Ms. Alexievich is a Belarussian author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2015.
Her work gets intimate with the townspeople, with interviews meticulously compiled in her 5 works, "The Unwomanly Face of War", "The Last Witnesses", "Zinky Boys: Soviet Voices form the Afghan War", "Chernobyl Prayer", and "Secondhand Time".
She depicts the suffering of the "little people" in her multi-voiced works from angles such as the experiences of women and children in the second world war, the ravages of the Soviet war in Afghanistan, the tragedy of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and the severe social problems caused by the dissolution of the Soviet Union. To honour those achievements and the bravery that keeps questioning the past and future of humanity, TUFS has awarded Ms. Alexievich an honorary PhD. Ms. Alexievich is the second person to receive an honorary PhD from TUFS, following Donald Keen in 1999.
At the event, to celebrate the award, the award ceremony was followed by a celebratory speech and student discussion. The attendance was such that the assembly hall was fully occupied with students who had registered in advance and members of the public, and more stood to watch a broadcast in a separate room.
This event was covered by several media outlets.
