On November 21, 2020, we held an international symposium, entitled “Aiming for better intercultural communication: Communication studies focusing on the workplace”.

In recent years, there’s been an increase of workplaces that have both Japanese and foreign workers. What can employers and workers, educators and researchers do in order to attain a better workplace communication.

This symposium was held as part of TUFS’ Center for Intercultural Studies Multi-cultural coexistence activities on the theme of intercultural communication in the workplace and was supervised by Associate Professor OTSU, Tomomi from the Graduate School of Japan Studies. 7 presentations on communication issues in the workplace and possible solutions and communication studies centeres in the workplace were made. There were approximately 180 participants of varying occupations: corporate related individuals, Japanese and University educators and workplace communication researchers among others. At the end of the symposium, an interaction exchange between participants was held online. It was an excellent opportunity for employers to think about better workplace communication and educators and researchers to further think about communication issues.
