106th TUFS Intermural Boat Race
July 5, 2019
On Thursday the 6th of June, the TUFS Intermural Boat Race, which has a history spanning over 100 years, was held at the Toda Rowing Course in Toda City, Saitama Prefecture.
The TUFS Intermural Boat Race is an event based mostly around first year students and international students. This year, 62 crews, that’s 310 students, competed in the race. The participants row together in boats of five over a 300 meter course. In total, 29 races were held, with a focus on ‘hagyō races’ (split into men's and women's) between students and teachers (voluntary) of all the different departments at TUFS.
The students wore and participated in t-shirts* matching with classmates from their own departments. These t-shirts were vibrant as always, reflecting the characteristics of each language and region. During the final ‘hagyō races’, students could be seen running alongside their teammates to cheer them on, showing the teamwork and unity of each department. A little rain fell on the day of the race, but this did not put a damper on what was a successful event.
