Screening of “Oguni Haru Kumaryo 2016” held at TUFS

December 12, 2018

On Thursday the 21st of June, “Oguni Haru Kumaryo 2016”, a film about Matagi (traditional winter hunters) in the Yamagata Prefecture, was screened in the Prometheus Hall of AGORA Global as part of the ‘TUFS Cinema Carnivorous Beasts Film Series’.

After the screening, the film’s director, Mr. Gohey Hayashi, and a TUFS student involved in hunting, Ms. Momoko Okazoe (School of International and Area Studies, Southwest European Area Studies, fourth year), held a talk session as guest speakers, and were accompanied by TUFS lecturer Mr. Takanori Oinishi, who acted as host of this session.

At this talk session, the speakers discussed the motivations for making this film, their thoughts after being so close to Matagi, and the ceremony held after catching a bear.

A questions and answer session was held at the beginning and end of the talk, and many questions were asked on filming techniques, the lifestyle of Matagi, and the Oguni Bear Festival.

In the audience surveys, many comments were written about how the film’s unedited nature made them feel as if they were really there, and how listening to the director during the talk session helped them to understand the film more clearly.
