“The Man Who Mends Women” Screened at TUFS

February 19, 2019

On Thursday the 20th of December 2018, “The Man Who Mends Women”, a documentary film following the work of Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Denis Mukwege, was screened in AGORA Global’s Prometheus Hall as TUFS Cinema’s African Film Feature.
This screening was able to happen thanks to the support of the Japan Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Specified NPO Japan for UNHCR.
This film follows the esteemed gynecologist Dr. Denis Mukwege who has devoted himself to treating women in Eastern Congo, which is often depicted as “the worst place in the world for girls and women”, and promotes women’s rights around the world.
After the film, speeches were given by Professor Ichiro Majima (TUFS, Institute of Global Studies) and surprise guest, contemporary artist Mr. Masanori Oda.
This screening was attended by many people from both inside and outside of TUFS. When asked for their opinions on the film, attendees had much to say such as “It was such a heartbreaking documentary, but a good chance for me to learn about what is happening in the world”, “I realized I know nothing”, and “I saw an unimaginable reality, and thought that there must be something I can do to help. First, I want to tell more people about this reality.”

This screening was held as part of the UNHCR Refugee Film Festival’s School Partners initiative. For more information on this year’s UNHCR Refugee Film Festival, click on the links below.
