Participation in the Eleventh Annual Symposium of the Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS)
December 13, 2021
The 11th Annual Symposium of the Consortium for Asian and African Studies (CAAS), titled "Diversity and Representation: Representing Diversity, Diversifying Representation," was held online by the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
The symposium began with an opening address by CAAS Executive Coordinator, Professor MATSUKUMA Jun (Vice-President), followed by three days of presentations by a total of 50 researchers and students from CAAS member institutions, including four faculty members and 11 graduate students from TUFS.
On the third and final day of the symposium, titled “Africa Day,” a roundtable discussion was held to exchange ideas and opinions on African studies among researchers, and symposium participants were joined by Associate Professor SHINAGAWA Daisuke (Joint Coordinator/Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa).
The symposium provided a valuable opportunity, especially for young researchers, to gain significant experience in presenting their research at an international symposium. It was also a chance to exchange research with leading researchers from around the world and with other young researchers.
CAAS is composed of seven of the world's leading research institutions in the field of Asian and African studies, of which TUFS is the principal institution. This symposium is held annually by CAAS member institutions on a rotating basis. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's symposium took place online, but next year is expected to be held onsite at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
