Who Can Apply
This programme is open to master’s students from the Graduate School of Global Studies and in Japan Studies at TUFS. Up to five students are selected each year.
Admission Process
Candidates are selected at the beginning of the academic year (between April and May) through a screening process based on documents and interviews. Final admission decisions are made in collaboration with a consortium of universities.
Entry Requirements
(1) Electronic versions of all higher education academic records
(2) Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume
(3) Motivation Letter (500 words) :
Outline your academic interests, relevant academic or work experience, and future career plans.
(4) Research proposal (500 words): a 500-word
A detailed proposal for your MA thesis, which will play a significant role in the admissions decision. Your topic should align with one of the four thematic foci of the History in the Public Sphere programme and be clearly structured. Include details of any previous work on the subject, relevant source materials, language skills, and any other qualifications.
※Four thematic foci:
- History and the institutionalization of memory
- Visual representations and medialization of history
- Histories of inclusion and exclusion
- Entanglement between national, regional and global frameworks of history
(5) Proof of English proficiency:
If your degree was taught entirely in English, you are exempt from this requirement. Otherwise, you must submit a valid test score (taken within the last two years):
TOEFL iBT88, IELTS Academic 6.5, Pearson Test of English (Academic) 59, Cambridge English Language Assessment C1 Advanced – Grade B, C2 Proficiency – Grade C
(6) Two letters of recommendation
(7) Copy of the passport
(8) Certificate of residence

2. Submit the required documents on the Submission Form, which will be available from April 8 (Deadline: May 7)
*Submission Form will be sent to the applicants who completed the Application Form (①)
*However, please ask the recommenders to submit the two letters of recommendation directly to the secretariat. We will contact the applicants with specific instructions on how to submit the letters of recommendation, so please pass this on to the recommenders.
3. Selection & Final Decision: Interview Period: May 19–23
Results will be announced by the end of May, with final programme acceptance confirmed in late June after a joint selection meeting between TUFS and CEU.
Scholarship
Students who meet the eligibility criteria may receive priority for a scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
Eligibility
- Japanese nationality or permanent residency in Japan (including special permanent residents).
- GPA of 2.30 or higher in the previous academic year.
- Demonstrated financial need that makes self-funding the programme difficult.
A person who has Japanese nationality or has been granted permanent residence in Japan (including special permanent residents).
A person whose Grade Point Average (GPA) in the previous fiscal year (FY) was 2.30 or higher.
Those who are acknowledged as having difficulty in participating in the program at their own expense, due to financial reasons.
Monthly Stipend
- 70,000 – 110,000 yen, depending on the study location.
Note: Scholarship details are subject to change. The programme may also cover travel expenses and accommodation allowances.
