PROGRAM

Four Themes

The courses and projects offered in HIPS are structured around four main themes, and students are expected to conduct their individual research based on some of these themes.

  1. History and the institutionalization of memory
How have museums and archives contributed to the formation of historical knowledge? Also, through what mechanisms are memories of the past institutionalized as collective memory? History and the institutionalization of memory examine conflicting memories and history, including the rise of revisionism.
  2. Visual representation and medialization of history
How can we interpret a vast number of historical images in modern society through the media in an interdisciplinary way? Visual representation and medialization of history provides skills to interpret and develop cutting-edge historical representations from documentary films to video games.
  3. Histories of inclusion and exclusion
How can a society truly recognize diversity? The history of inclusion and exclusion examines the socio-cultural, legal, and political aspects of gender-based, religious, ethnic, economic, social, and other forms of discrimination and violence.
  4. Entanglement between national, regional, and global frameworks of history
How can the knowledge gained from moving between Japan and Europe be applied and developed in your research? Entanglement between national, regional, and global frameworks of history offers proper methodologies for conducting research based on a transnational perspective and comparative viewpoint.

Curriculum

The enrolled students will spend one year at each of CEU and TUFS during the two-year program, starting in September. At each university, they will engage in the following three components, which will be primarily conducted in English throughout the program.

  1. Coursework
The coursework consists of the mandatory core courses, the mandatory elective courses, and the elective courses. The credits required to complete this program are 30 credits from TUFS and 120 ECTS from CEU. Credits are transferred between universities, and each university will award the credits required for graduation.
(*ECTS is a European credit system, and 2 ECTS is equivalent to 1 credit in Japan.)
  2. Practical experience and skills acquisition
The program offers opportunities for workshops, study tours, and internships in Japan and Europe. This includes study visits and group projects on history and memory.
  3. Accomplishment of individual research
Students will receive research supervision and work on a thesis or project. Each student will submit a thesis prospectus and participate in a defense at the end of each semester. They will receive training in presenting academic research in English internationally. Faculty from both universities will supervise and examine the thesis, allowing students to conduct research from a diverse perspective.
