Double Degree Program "History in the Public Sphere (HIPS)
This program is a master's level double degree program "History in the Public Sphere (HIPS)" jointly administered by the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and four European universities.
During the two and a half year program, participating students study at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Central European University (CEU/Hungary/Austria), Università degli Studi di Firenze (UNiFI/Italy), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA/Portugal), and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO/France), Students will study at these institutions, moving from semester to semester. There, students take classes, engage in internships and other practical work, and conduct research for their master's thesis. Finally, after a joint review by all institutions, they can obtain two degrees: a Master of Arts (Academic) from TUFS and a Master of Arts in History from Central European University.
Key to this program are "history" and the "public sphere.
While considering the various ways in which history is connected to the public sphere, the program will develop four themes: "Institutionalization of Memory and Politicization of History," "Visual Representation and Mediatization of History," "History of Inclusion and Exclusion," and "Intersection of Nation, Region, and Global History, The program aims to nurture global human resources who can generate academic knowledge about history in relation to society and link it to practice.
