It specializes in non-Western European languages and civilizations, and combines the study of a hundred languages from all continents while teaching and research their geography, history, institutions, and the political, economic, and social life. Research teams specialize in various regions, especially the Middle East, Africa, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Eurasia as well as on thematic areas such as media studies, literature and orality, linguistic identities, and cultural heritage.
