African Studies Center - TUFS will hold the 22nd ASC Seminar on October 26, 2018. The Seminar is jointly organized by Kanto branch of Japan Association for African Studies. The speaker is Prof. Scarlett Cornelissen from Stellenbosch University at South Africa. She has been in Japan as a visiting researcher at Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (IDE-JETRO).

In the seminar, Prof. Cornelissen will focus on the patterns and dynamics in South Africa's ties with northeast Asia, especially China, Japan and South Korea and explores trajectories and tendencies in the relations between those countries.

◆Title: South Africa's Economic and Political Relations with Northeast Asia

◆Abstract：
Taking a comparative perspective, this seminar discusses the patterns and dynamics in South Africa's ties with northeast Asia, centring on the three major powers of that region: China, Japan and South Korea. The seminar explores trajectories and tendencies in the relations between South Africa and the northeast Asian powers and contextualises and explains them against the way in which Asia's interests in Africa are shifting. In the seminar I seek to answer two analytical questions: First, what is the nature of the Asian countries' economic and political role in South Africa, and what are the primary drivers? Second, how do these relate to South Africa's economic and industrial strategies and what are the attendant effects on political relationships with the Asian powers?
