TUFS International Residences
- International Residence Hall No.1 and No.2 (in Japanese)
- International Residence Hall No.3 (in Japanese)
Most exchange students reside in one of two TUFS International Residences on the TUFS campus. Built in 2004 and 2006, both Residences are well-equipped. The dormitories include single rooms as well as several couple and family rooms. Each room comes furnished with a single bed, desk with drawers, chair, bookshelves, shelves for food, hanging clothes, and storing shoes, a small kitchen area with stove, refrigerator, and sink, telephone and WiFi connection, waste basket, several lighting fixtures and a desk lamp, an air filter, and an air conditioner/heater. Family rooms come with several other pieces of furniture.
In addition, all rooms have a balcony area which can be used for hanging clothes, accessible via a sliding door for which we provide curtains. Finally, some rooms are equipped with a private bathroom that includes a shower/bath, sink, and toilet, while residents in other rooms have a private sink and toilet, but must share showers with several neighbors (separate for males and females). Each floor of both dormitories have coin-operated laundry facilities (washers and dryers).
All residents also have a private mail box located in the front of the TUFS International Residences. Other common areas and rooms include a large Shared Kitchen, Television Lounge, Music/Piano Room, Japanese Style Room for cultural activities and events, Study Room equipped with computers and desks, and a recreational area with table tennis and other equipment. There is an office located in the TUFS International Residences for staff, and each floor in each Residence one Japanese Tutor. Tutors are Japanese students at TUFS, usually at the graduate level, who reside in the dormitories to provide assistance to residents, and to deal with any emergencies. One Tutor is on call each day and night.
Fees at the TUFS International Residence are generally very low compared to similar private housing, and depend on the type of room (single, couple, and family). Students also have to pay for utility services such as electricity, water, and gas. Students who maintain a telephone line in their room will also have to pay the requisite costs, but most international students opt for a mobile phone. The university does not currently offer any sort of meal plan. However, the on-campus cafeterias offer good meals at low cost, and students can prepare meals by themselves using the kitchen facilities in their rooms or the larger shared kitchen in each Residence.
Around Campus
Student life at TUFS centers around the new university campus that was built in year 2000. Located in a fast developing but quiet western suburb of Tokyo with access to several train and bus lines, the campus is surrounded by a wealth of greenery and nature including several large and beautiful parks, river areas, and many sports fields. Basic shopping such as convenience stores, small supermarkets, and several restaurants are within walking distance. The campus is also close to Ajinomoto Stadium where many sporting events and concerts take place, the campuses of International Christian University and Hitotsubashi University, the Jindaiji Temple and Botanical Garden area, as well as popular shopping and recreation centers like Kichijoji and Chofu. Shinjuku (the busiest station in Tokyo) is also only about 30 minutes away by train.
On-campus facilities include the Administration offices, Health Care Center, Library, Research and Lecture building, the Japanese Language Center for International Students (JLC), Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA), University Hall with two cafeterias offering good-quality low-cost meals and a student store, a five story Gymnasium with Music Rooms and rooms for extracurricular club activities and offices, sports fields, tennis courts, and the TUFS International Residences. A Main Auditorium and several new buildings are also planned for the future.
